7 Ludo Tips and Tricks That Actually Win Games

Let's be honest: Ludo is mostly luck. But "mostly" isn't "entirely" โ€” and the players who consistently win family tournaments aren't just lucky. They're making better decisions with the rolls they get. Here are seven that actually work.

1. Spread your tokens โ€” never race just one

The classic beginner mistake: bringing one token out and sprinting it around the board while three sit in base. One capture and you've lost ten turns of progress. Bring out two or three tokens early (every 6 is a chance) and advance them in a loose group.

2. Live on the star squares

The 8 safe squares (marked โ˜…) are the only places you can't be captured. When an opponent is 1โ€“6 squares behind you, your #1 priority is reaching the next star โ€” even if it means not advancing your lead token. A safe token is a banked token.

3. Capture with intent, not emotion

Capturing feels amazing, but ask: does this capture earn me an extra turn I can use, or does it leave my token stranded in enemy territory? Capturing a token that's about to enter its safe home column anyway? Worth it. Diving across the board for a revenge capture while your other tokens sit exposed? Usually not.

4. Count the danger zone

Any opponent 1โ€“6 squares behind your token can capture you on their next roll (unless you're on a star). Before ending your turn, glance behind. If someone's in range and you're not safe, move a different token โ€” or get to safety.

5. Use your 6s wisely

A 6 gives you two gifts: a move and another turn. Great options: bring a new token out (more tokens = more options), or finish a capture. What not to do: roll your third 6 carelessly โ€” three in a row cancels your whole turn.

6. The home stretch needs planning

You need the exact roll to enter home. A token sitting 2 squares from home with you rolling 5s and 6s is stuck โ€” so while others advance, keep one mid-board token as your "spare mover" for awkward rolls.

7. Play the players, not just the board

Against aggressive players, stay on stars and let them overextend. Against cautious players, push captures โ€” they'll hesitate to retaliate. And in the endgame, remember: it's a race. Sometimes the right move is ignoring a capture and sprinting home.

The one "trick" to avoid

You'll see videos promising "dice control tricks" or "always roll 6" hacks. They're nonsense โ€” online dice are random, and anyone selling a trick is selling you something else. The tips above are the real edge. Everything else is superstition with background music.
